Nano-Scale Electrodes for Novel Solid Oxide Cells
Abstract
This talk will describe the use of nano-scale materials in solid oxide cell electrodes. Such electrodes enable solid oxide cells that yield high power densities at temperatures below 600oC. Furthermore, nano-scale catalyst particles have proven useful for improving the performance of conducting-oxide fuel electrode materials; these are promising candidates for avoiding problems with Ni-based anodes, but often yield relatively high polarization resistances. Methods for producing nano-scale electrode structures, including impregnation and catalyst exsolution processes, will be discussed. Electrochemical characteristics will be described, along with models of electrode rate-limiting processes. Examples to be discussed will include impregnated (Sm,Sr)CoO3 and (La,Sr)(Fe,Co)O3 oxygen electrodes, along with impregnated Ni and (La,Sr)(Cr,M)O3 (M = Ru or Pd) fuel electrodes. The stability of nano-scale electrodes will be discussed, as well as novel regenerative nano-catalyst structures.
