"Nano" does not make it all, when considering the thermochromic properties of silver-gelatin bionanocomposites. These materials are designed by in situ growth of silver nanoparticles within the protein matrix. During the sol-gel transition, an unprecedent shift of the main UV-visible absorption peak of bionanocomposite of more than 100 nm , which is fully reversible, was observed. However, as shown in the present work made in collaboration with I.B. Rietveld (Faculté de Pharmacie, Université Paris Descartes), the thermal color change is not due to interactions between nanoparticles, as expected, but to a modification of the light diffusion properties of the biopolymer matrix. More precisely, the reducing agent used for silver particle formation, hydrazine, modifies the structure of gelatin in the gel state but not in the sol state. These results shed new light on the multiple factors that contribute to the properties of bionanocomposites currently developed for biotechnological applications

Our activity

The activity of the lab is focused on sol-gel processes used for the synthesis of original nanomaterials, based on oxides (metallic, organic-inorganic hybrides, inorganic-biologic hybrides), with various structures.

The aim is to better understand the processes involved in the inorganic polymerisation to control the whole process "synthesis - shaping - microstructure - properties".
